Cloudbusters’ May Outdoor Meet

The Cloudbusters’ May meet was a success.  We had sunshine, warm temperatures, and light breezes all day.  The only unfortunate part was that the breezes were blowing in just the wrong direction.  We tried to maximize our location to take advantage of the longest flight path at the park relative to the predicted wind direction.  Instead of the predicted breeze from the SSE, we experienced them from the South and SSW.  This put flight paths over the neighborhoods – several planes were lost or nearly lost.  We had about 10 flyers participating.

Team Volare (me and son Jack) had a successful day.  Jack had unexpected success with his race plane, getting it to fly very well, taking 2nd in Scale and 4th in Races.  He had been contemplating the old “fix-by-stomping” solution to its ills, but “Less Power” cured the initial torque rollovers.  Now he will need to trim to glide and he will have a truly competitive racer.

I put up 90-second flights in both Peanut and Scale to take home firsts.  I “could” have taken Phantom Flash, but I had a fly-away on my second flight which happened to be my second max.  A third max would have sealed that event, but I only had one model.  It looks like I will need to build multiple Flashes to avoid disappointment and future regret!

Customers’ Photos – Ewart Yong

One of my customers, Ewart Yong, from Singapore, sent in some photos of some of his planes.  One is a Keil Kraft Senator, built from plans and covered with Esaki tissue.  The other is a Flying Aces Moth from the Rocky Top kit, also covered in Esaki.  Of course, the Esaki and the kit came from the Basement!  Be sure to click the GALLERY link above to see all varieties of photos.

Very nice looking, Ewart!

New Small Propellers

I’ve picked up a supply of three new plastic propellers.  I will now carry the 4″ “Skeeter”-type propellers, a 4″ blue prop, and a 4.75″ blue prop.  The blue props appear to have a slightly higher pitch than the typical Peck props of the same diameters.  These are $1 each.

“I coulda been a contender!”

This is an inspiring, if not sad, tale of my Indoor Embryo experience this weekend.

Sunday, our club (the Detroit Cloudbusters) held their annual Indoor Fling contest in the huge Ultimate Soccer Arena.  This indoor venue covers a full soccer field, roughly 250’x360′ and is 40′ high on the sides and 70′ high in the center.  The ceiling has girders, of course, but there is plenty of space to get in great flights and you should be able to trim just about any plane to fly within the confines.

Being an outdoor flyer, I don’t have much opportunity, nor much cause to fly indoors.  In fact, I only fly one or two indoor events a year.  Saturday morning, I was contemplating the contest over my morning coffee, reviewing the event list and what planes I have that could fly in each.  Embryo was on the list and I had been casually considering building an Indoor Embryo for a month or two, but hadn’t got around to it.

As flown under FAC rules, Embryo would be limited to the total of 3 flights with a 2 minute max on each flight.  Even indoor experts would be limited to 2 minutes – there’s no advantage to 4 or 5 minute flights!  I figured that I might be able to build an indoor (only) Embryo that I could be light enough that I might be able to extend the motor run to approach 2 minutes.

Over winter, while thinking these thoughts, I had modified an existing plan (that I knew to fly well) to be bare minimum structure, but had not done any building.  I had two tasks for Saturday: grout the tile backsplash in the kitchen and pack the truck for the contest.  Well, three actually – getting a haircut got cut from the list as I made a decision:  I planned to squeeze building an entire plane from scratch in between the kitchen work and the truck packing.  I couldn’t pack the truck too late since we had to leave about 5:30 in the morning for the 2 hour drive over to Pontiac.  So…9am to noon was spent finishing up the backsplash – lots of work, but it looks good!

After lunch, it was time to jump in.  The clock started at 1pm.  By 1:30, the wing was built.  By 2:10, the tail surfaces were built.  By 3:30 the fuselage was framed up.  By 6:45, everything was covered.  And finish assembly, nose block and landing gear put me at 11 grams and 8:30.  Test glides showed that I took too much weight out of the tail.  For me, that’s record time for a full-bodied plane.  I packed up my planes, packed up the merchandise and got to bed around 10pm.

11-12 grams on this 49.5 square-inch plane gave me hope that it would be possible to power this plane with a long loop of 1/8″ rubber turning the 7″ prop.  The first task was to get the plane balanced and trimmed for circular flight.  I used a short motor and was pleased to see slow-climbing and slow-flying large circles, even though the circles could be a bit large.  Testing on this short motor (about 1000 turns) produced flights in the 40-50 second range – right where I hoped!

I eventually got a longer motor installed (and fixed a faulty rear peg) and got about the business of re-trimming.  Things were looking good, but I just had to get those circles smaller.  I was getting a slow steady climb-out and I knew I would soon be able to put in some respectable official flights that would challenge for the lead.  Unfortunately, the fickle finger of fate pointed at my plane.  I couldn’t get the circles trimmed just right and at around 50 seconds into one of these test flights, my plane had drifted to the edge and, at about 45+ feet, it go caught inside what appears be part of the ventilation system – irretrievable.

So ended my attempted foray into Indoor Embryo.  I won’t be taking that trip for about another 11 months!

April Activity

Early in the month, we had two successful sales events, the Toledo R/C show and the Kent State Indoor meet.  I also flew at Kent state.  Since then, we’ve been filling orders and I have been resurrecting some long-retired models to augment my flying stable this summer.

Unfortunately, the first outdoor contest was cancelled last weekend due to a lake on the flying field.  Next weened is the Indoor Fling in Pontiac.  That will be my last Indoor meet this year.  That’s OK, because I am an outdoor flyer!

This morning, I spent a little time updating the new Basement site.  I added several helpful hints and comments to the checkout process.  And, I adjusted the PayPal payment system to more clearly illuminate the Pay by Credit Card option.

As always, I have to keep up with declining stock levels, reordering products.  Not a bad problem to have!  If there is something you want that is at zero stock level, let me know and I will get it.  Also, if you have ideas about new products, certainly send them in – I am always looking to find useful items that all modelers can use.

See you on the flying field!  –g

Volare Products TEAM HiMax takes 3rd

My HiMax NoCal took a respectable 3rd place at the 2013 Cleveland Indoor contest at Kent State University.  My three-flight total was roughly 340 seconds.  I was beaten only by veteran indoor flyers whose flights total around 900 seconds (that is 3 – 5-minute flights!)  I had no illusions I would ever beat them, but this model did just what I wanted – top “outdoor” flyer at the “indoor” event.

Cleveland Indoor Contest

I updated the calendar entry for the Cleveland Free Flight Society’s Annual Indoor Contest.  Initially, I thought that I would be flying only, but I was told that vendors are welcome.  So, I will be packing up the truck and have product available at the Kent State Fieldhouse on Sunday.  See you there!

One Year Anniversary!

Wow, how time flies!  This weekend is the official ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the Shorty’s Basement move to new ownership (01 April is the official day).  There have been some difficult patches, and there are still some issues that lay ahead in the future, but I certainly think we made the right decision to save The Basement.  Today, I turned off the old store and have redirected everyone to this new site.  Of course, it still needs tweaking, too, but I feel it will serve you better and serve me better.  Thanks for all of the positive comments that I have heard throughout the year and I look forward to helping all of you and meeting even more of you in the coming year.

Look for us next Saturday at the Toledo R/C Show Swap Shop (see the calendar event over there on the right ==>).  We will have two or three tables loaded with Free Flight stuff!
