August Cloudbusters Meet

I just posted several photos to the August Cloudbusters Meet gallery.  There was limited attendance and limited events, but we had a great time anyway.  Oh, there are limited photos, also.

Short story:  Team Volare did good enough – Jack won Embryo and I won Scale and Phantom Flash.  All events (5 kanones) were hotly contested and spread around (5 events, 4 different winners).  Look for a write-up in an upcoming Cloudbusters newsletter.

Here is the link to the gallery.

And here is a preview – Jack’s latest plane climbing out.  It is a Beech Staggerwing from Rich Weber’s Dime Scale plan done up in Jackie Cochran’s Bendix racer colors.

2013 Grant MIMLOCT

I went to the local school yard at the appointed time and gave my Cloud Tramp a toss.  It flew for 2:02 (122 seconds) – the best it has ever flown!  Now to send in my results.

Dennis Ruhland flying his Nieuport 17

As I start to go through the hundreds of photos I took at Geneseo, I thought I would toss up this photo and video.  This is Dennis Ruhland from the Chicago area.  He is one of the younger guys in the Flying Aces Club, but his airplanes kept catching my eye.  This is his rubber-powered Nieuport 17 that he flew on Saturday evening, after all competition was done. Here is a video:

F.A.I. Rubber in Stock!

It’s been a crazy month for the business as I’ve been to the AMA Nats and the FAC Non-Nats.  I virtually sold out of rubber, but I placed an order with FAI just before Charlie headed to France for the World Champs.  This morning, I took delivery of over $650 worth of all sizes (1/4, 1/2, 1 pounds of 1/16″, 3/32″, 1/8″, 3/16″) of FAI Super Sport rubber (the only rubber I think is worth selling!) and Crocket Hooks.  All of the FAI quantities have been updated on the web site, so if you’ve been holding back due to low stock, go ahead and order now.

the Caudron C.460 Returns!

About 20 years ago, I had drawn and built a Caudron C.460 that was very successful for me.  I won several kanones, but lost the plane.  Since my return, I had been thinking of building another.  With the loss of my little Peanut Keith Rider R-2 earlier this month, I needed another race plane.

I redesigned the plans to enlarge them to the Race-max 24″ span and cleaned up some irritating scale deviations and I built this plane in about a week and a half; finishing the model on Tuesday evening before my long drive to Geneseo Wednesday.  I got a couple rough test flights in Wednesday evening and a 1:10 minute official flight was recorded on Thursday for Scale.

There was (naturally) disappointment on Saturday during the Greve Race, when my great launch turned into a sky-high zoom, stalling into the ground.  But, overall, I am very pleased to have one of my all-time favorite planes back in my stable.

Crunch Time!

Ha, that’s a bad choice of words, but I am going down to the wire trying to get a plane built for Geneseo.  I don’t know if I will make it!

2013 AMA Free Flight Nats

I went down to Muncie to participate in the FAC Events at the AMA Nats.  There was disappointment in the weather (windy) and attendance (three of us, plus walk-ups from the NFFS), but it was a good time, anyway!  Here are 25 photos that I have posted from the FAC events and also some tip-launch gliders and NFFS action.

Cloudbusters’ July Picnic and Contest

It was a beautiful day in Flint yesterday; not too hot, partly cloudy and bright, with light breezes.  The only downside was the breezes were running the short length of the field.

We had a great picnic, with about 40+ people in attendance.  There were at least a dozen flyers; the most for a Flint event in quite awhile.  Wonderful food was provided by the club and some people brought other dishes.  Surely no one went away hungry!  Long distance award goes to Pat Murray, who brought his family up in an RV for a long mini-vacation weekend all the way from the Indianapolis area.

Team Volare had a so-so day.  Jack put up an 83 second flight with his Elmendorf Special and was holding on to first until Pat Murray beat him out with his great flying Stinson SR-7.  Jack also lost the Races on a poor launch.  So, two second places for him; he didn’t fly Embryo, due to the short field.

I took second in Embryo with my Big Cat.  To (hopefully) keep my plane, I put in a half-length motor.  My first flight caught a thermal and maxed and I almost lost the plane in spite of my cautionary actions.  My next two were roughly 60-second flights, causing Winn Moore to crank up his Debut for a risky max flight for the victory.

I also took first in NoCal with my trusty P-39.  The worst part of the day for me was my favorite Peanut Keith Rider R-2 racer – I put up a 1:27 flight to take first in Peanut, but the plane came down in an inaccessible wooded, brushy area.  I guess it won’t be repeating as AMA Nats champ in Peanut next week.

Here is a shot of Jack’s racer cruising at altitude – what a beautiful site – this is what Free Flight Scale is all about  I will have more event pics up in a couple of days.

Big Cat has KIT-tens!

Well, what I have been planning for a year now has finally been achieved:  I have produced the Big Cat Embryo laser-cut kit.  This is a full kit, complete down to plastic for the wind screen and 4 feet of 3/16″ FAI Super Sport rubber.  As with all Volare Products Plans, my Kits will have been proven.  That is, they will be built and flown, to insure a level of quality.  This one was built per plan, and flew in its first contest without any adjustment:  no tweaking of surfaces, no clay to balance, no thrust changes – and it WON!

So, if you are looking for a contest-proven Embryo kit, head on over to the Basement and pick it up for only $20 before shipping.
