NEW PRODUCT – Laser Cut Wheel Pants for the Jimmie Allen Special

Designed for the Jimmie Allen Special (or any sport plane with a 1″ diameter wheel), this laser cut kit contains parts for two wheels, two wheel pants, two exhaust stacks, and instructions.

The Jimmie Allen Special did not come with wheel pants, but the plane design qualifies for Embryo class (less than 50 sq in wing area, fuselage contains a 1.25″x1.5″x3″ volume). To get maximum bonus points in Embryo, you need wheel pants and exhaust, in addition to the open cockpit.

The pants design reflects the art deco style of the landing gear covers.

This adds only about 1 gram to your model – AND – it adds it at the longest lever arm in front of the CG. This can possibly help your model by allowing the wing moved forward slightly to create a longer tail moment (more stability).

January Update

Wow, since I playfully posted my January 1st fun fly video (on youtube), the weather here has steadily gotten worse.  we are under a snow emergency currently, with the city and most businesses closed.  We have over a foot of snow and -2 degrees F with very strong winds.

Regardless, I have new products to release:  another Wheel Pants kit, another Embryo kit, and a new book from John Bell.  Of course, I recently announced that I now carry the Gizmo Geezer propeller/front end line.

Also, in two weeks, my father and I will head down to Louisiana to bring the SUPERIOR PROPS equipment, machinery, supplies and business back north to Ohio.  With any luck at all, we should be producing propellers in February some time.

Stay tuned for those product announcements!

BIGGEST NEWS YET – Volare Products is Purchasing Superior Props

Superor Props 1

As most of you are aware, Mr Bob Gourdon of Superior Props has been slipping in the fulfillment of orders for his Superior Props due to health reasons.  After much consideration, gentle prodding from fellow modelers, and a trip from Michigan to southern Louisiana, we have decided to purchase Mr Gourdon’s entire business and inventory and move it north.

The first stop for the business will be to Central Ohio.  As I am not yet retired and cannot devote enough time to making props, my father has agreed to partner with me and run the manufacturing for a time.  He is a retired Master Toolmaker and a Cabinetmaker before that, so he has all of the technical knowledge to step right in and operate the vast array of machines that it takes to make the props and the accessories that Mr. Gourdon produced and you all have come to enjoy.

Our plan is to have this operational by the end of the calendar year or in January.  This will take quite a bit of time and logistics – and cash.  We will be heading back down to Louisiana for at least one more several-day trip to learn the manufacturing processes and to haul the load of machines and stock back north.

We also would like to ask for help from you – the Free Flight Community.  Taking a page from modern day technology projects and even movie-making, we are asking the community to help us get this off the ground.  On the Shorty’s Basement website (http://www.volareproducts.com/BUY/), I have set up several contribution options that generous contributors may consider.

Here are the three things that I ask of you as you read this:  1- read the attached document, 2- forward this message (with the attachment) to as many of your fellow modelers as you can, and 3- consider a contribution, even a small one will help.  I am not a member of all mailing lists, so hit those, too.  Help be a part of saving wooden propellers for all modelers!

Thank you!

Triflyer in Action

I had the opportunity to test out the Triflyer indoors today.  I didn’t have a lot of time, but the plane flies pretty well.  This is flying with a  short loop of 3/32″ rubber and about 700 turns.  I anticipate times could grow greatly with proper trimming.  I anticipate super climb-outs with this outdoors.

NEW PRODUCT – Triflyer Kit

70 years ago this month, Flying Aces Magazine published its November 1943 issue.  It was during the middle of WWII and the civilian country was living with rationing and shortages of resources of all types.  The magazine, conscientious of the times and conditions, started producing plans for models that would use limited resources because balsa and such was getting hard to come by – even war planes were being built with balsa.

The Connecticut FAC Squadrons have identified 7 plans that fall into this “Victory Model” class and the Triflyer is one of them.  70 years later, we are offering this simple and fun model as a kit.

The Triflyer is a very fast build.  We have laser-cut every part except the leading edges of the wings and the motor stick.  It only has a 12″ span, but the wide-chord wing produces 36 square inches.  The original plan called for a single-bladed folding prop, but we are replacing that with a 4.75″ plastic prop.  We have also included 5 sheets of documentation and plans, so you can red the entire Flying Aces construction article and get the feel for the times.

The Volare Products kit is $12 – same as our Phantom Flash.  The laser parts sheet by itself is $6 and a combo pack of the full kit plus an extra sheet is $16.

New Product – Plug-n-Play Counter for the Rees ScaleWinder

Customers have often asked me if I sell a counter to go along with the Rees Winder.  I have had to answer with a “yes…but…”  The counters I have had require a lot of work on the customer’s part; including dis-assembly of the winder itself.

Now, after much thinking, 4 prototypes, and over 60 hours of design and development, I have created a product that any modeler can install in under 5 minutes (how long does a drop of CA take to set up?)   There are two steps:  glue a small magnet to the large gear – and – slip the counter into the winder.  That’s it!

Each item is hand made of durable, laser-cut, 1/32″ birch plywood.  The counter itself counts INPUT turns, so since the winder is a 10:1 winder, simply add a zero (or multiply the value x 10) and you have your turns on the motor.  Each until takes approximately 2 hours to assemble – I do the work to make it easy for you.

They are available now in the basement – look under Rubber, etc / Winders & Accessories.  $30 each, complete with illustrated instructions for installation and battery replacement.

Now, get crankin’!

Loss of a Friend – Lonnie Kinder

Last week, our small midwestern free flight community was shocked to hear that our friend, Lonnie Kinder, had passed away suddenly.  Lonnie was an important part of the Flying Aces Club in Indiana.  He was the Contest Director for an annual contest in the fall honoring another lost friend, the Ted Dock Memorial contest.

Lonnie was a kind and sharing guy that was friends with every contestant at the field.  At these annual contests at the AMA Flying Site in Muncie, Lonnie spent all his hours running the contest; who knows how many hours he spent preparing for the events.

I know a few of us were very disturbed by the news as we had jsut spent the weekend with him at this contest.  That weekend was Ball State’s Parents’ Weekend and all of the motel rooms were full by the time that I tried to make reservations.  Winn Moore and I were able to contact our friend Pat Murray and “reserve” a bed in his RV.  Lonnie also shared the RV with us.  We spend a couple late nights talking about flying and friends and good times.  Ironically, we discussed the passing of Phil Cox and his recent funeral.  How could we know that Lonnie would pass so soon?

I only knew Lonnie from the flying field, however, I know he loved his wife, since he talked often of her that weekend.  Usually, she would help him with the CD duties and she stayed home that weekend.  He also talked about his grandchildren: granddaughters and grandsons, with great pride and love.  I am sure they will miss him terribly.

Here is a photo of Lonnie doing his CD duties in the NFFS trailer at the 2012 Ted Dock Memorial Contest

End of 2013

Well, today was my last contest of 2013.  The last two Cloudbusters contests were rained out and today’s was actually supposed to be yesterday, but rain bumped it to the right one day.

Despite the low-to-mid 40s temperatures today, we had six contestants, but we only flew three events:  Phantom Flash, Embryo and the Cloudbusters’ annual P-30 contest.  I placed 3rd in each event. We don’t fly P-30 in any other contest, but we have a perpetual club trophy.  Winn Moore won the Cup again this year after shearing his wing off in a tree.  He glued and taped it all back together and managed to put up some really decent flights on an overcast day.

Here is out Grand Master, Stu Weckerly, flying his Coupe D’Hivre just for fun in the pre-winter weather.

New GeeBee Z-style Embryo Wheel Pants

I’ve been using this wheel pants kit on my latest Embryo (the Sky Rocket).  While I liked my original design, I felt they lacked some…pizzazz.  So I traced the wheel pants shape of the classic GeeBee Z race plane.  Now my pants are swoopy!  Comes complete with plywood wheels.

BLAST TUBES are BACK!

It’s been about a year since I ran out of material for Blast Tubes.  Now I have sourced a better type of tubing.  We are back to the original thin-wall (0.012″) tubing which makes the product lighter and more flexible.

I have added reflective tape to both ends of each tube.  And, of course, the extraction hooks still come with yarn.  Both of these details increase visibility or the items when they are laying in the grass at the flying field!

The set of 3 is comprised of tubes of the following dimensions:  13/16″ diameter x 20″ long, 9/16″ diameter x 16″ long, and 7/16″ diameter x 12″ long.  These are general sizes meant to fit a wide variety of model planes.

If, however, you have need for exacting dimensions, I can offer custom length Blast Tubes.  These are available in the 13/16″ diameter and the 9/16″ diameter up to 36″ long.

Find these under “Accessories/Miscellaneous” or “Rubber…/Winders…”
