{"id":3505,"date":"2018-11-21T09:56:36","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T14:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/blog\/?p=3505"},"modified":"2018-11-21T09:56:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T14:56:36","slug":"a-can-prop-for-nocals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/a-can-prop-for-nocals\/","title":{"rendered":"A Can Prop for NoCals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows about Plastic Props.\u00a0 Many people know about carved wood props.\u00a0 There is another type of prop that you can make that is a) light weight and b) effective.\u00a0 I call these &#8220;Can Props&#8221; because they are formed on a can.<\/p>\n<p>I have experimented off and on with these for years &#8211; and they still challenge me (probably because I don&#8217;t do them enough).\u00a0 These are often seen on indoor models (Limited Penny Plane), but also some of the top scale modelers make these for their large models (Free Flight, of course).<\/p>\n<p>A couple years ago, I did my Cessna Turbo 195 and asked Don Slusarczyk what to use for a prop and he suggested a 10&#8243; diameter 15&#8243; pitch prop and gave me instructions on how to make it.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t too hard to make (wet formed balsa) and it works great.\u00a0 Later I asked him what kind of similar prop to use for an Embryo and the pattern he recommended (7&#8243; diameter 15&#8243; pitch) worked well again.\u00a0 Of course, matching the rubber to the prop is essential.<\/p>\n<p>So I started to make this prop for a WWII NoCal where the prop diameter is limited to 7&#8243; by rule.\u00a0 I finished this prop to be used on my B.A.T. Monoplane Dimer, but was told to check the rules (one piece props only for Dimers!)<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of what I put it on, here is a short segment on how I built it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3508\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0-1024x308.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0-1024x308.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0-768x231.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp0.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>This is my first attempt on the prop for the Cessna.\u00a0 Don provided the design for the fixture to set 15&#8243; pitch.\u00a0 Note the bracket at the hub to hold the prop spar (1\/16&#8243; dowel).\u00a0 Also, this initial prop used an aluminum hub whereas the second Cessna prop used a one-piece spar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3509\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1-750x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1-750x1024.jpg 750w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1-768x1048.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp1.jpg 879w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>For this new prop, I laid out the prop design on a plastic cup.\u00a0 This is 18 degrees off vertical.\u00a0 This cup is my Template &#8211; I take a second cup and slip it over this and trace the pattern on the second cup.\u00a0 In that way, I do not have to continually lay out the design on a cup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3510\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2.jpg 661w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 661px) 100vw, 661px\" \/><\/a>I use these cups from Walmart.\u00a0 They are small.\u00a0 This bag of 80 cups cost about $4.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3512\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3-1024x516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3-1024x516.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3-768x387.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Here is a single blade set up in a new fixture that was based on the old fixture but was designed for a fatter aluminum tube hub.\u00a0 The hub was drilled for 1\/32&#8243; wire and that wire slips into a vertical tube to positively prevent rotation.\u00a0 More in the next photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3506\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4-1024x638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4-1024x638.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp4.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>This is the back side of the same blade.\u00a0 I used standard round toothpick as the primary spar.\u00a0 Rather than cut the blade to fit the spar, I sanded a flat on the spar and glued it to the blade.\u00a0 This method necessitated a tubing hub as shown.\u00a0 The blade was very flexible, so I added a 1\/32&#8243;x1\/16&#8243; stiffener to the back side of the blade.\u00a0 I sanded it thinner.\u00a0 The toothpick spar is being glued into the aluminum tubing with Canopy Glue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3511\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"663\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2a.jpg 663w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp2a-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/a>Gluing to the cup\/blade is nearly impossible, but Loctite makes a product that primes the plastic.\u00a0 There is science behind this, but I won&#8217;t attempt to explain it &#8211; just know that this works.\u00a0 The &#8220;Activator&#8221; is the key &#8211; I am pretty sure the glue is just CA.\u00a0 Without this glue, I couldn&#8217;t glue the toothpick or the stiffener to the blade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3507\" src=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5-1018x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5-1018x1024.jpg 1018w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5-768x773.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volareproducts.com\/new2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/CanProp5.jpg 1193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>The finished prop comes in under 1 gram.\u00a0 By the way, that is just flat black Design Master sprayed on the blades.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t yet tried this prop on any plane, but am confident that it will work for indoor models.\u00a0 I anticipate having to match rubber to the prop and maybe trimming some of the prop away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows about Plastic Props.\u00a0 Many people know about carved wood props.\u00a0 There is another type of prop that you can make that is a) light weight and b) effective.\u00a0 I call these &#8220;Can Props&#8221;
